  • Description

A convicted murderer was shot and killed in a Chicago courthouse yesterday (19 October) after he seized a hostage and tried to escape.

After being sentenced to the electric chair, the convict, Gene Lewis, aged 28, produced a gun, reportedly given to him by another prisoner in the Criminal Court Building. He put the gun to the head of a deputy sheriff and forced him to accompany him to the seventh floor where they met two attorneys. One tried to run away and was slightly injured by a shot from Lewis.

Guards closed in. Four bullets hit the convict and he died in a corridor. The deputy sheriff escaped unhurt.

Lewis had been convicted of killing a guard while robbing a truck in Des Plaines, Illinois. He was described by Chicago police as one of the city's moist dangerous criminals.

After the shooting in the court building there was a disturbance outside involving Lewis's brother, David. He tried to park his car in front of the court and allegedly threatened a policeman who told him to move on. He was arrested. His mother, who was near to collapse, was carried away by friends.
