  • Description

After 72 days of drought, snow fell in Tokyo on Tuesday (22nd January While traffic ground to a half, and pedestrians slithered on the footpaths the pandas at the Ueno Zoo - Kangkang and Lanlan -came in contact with their first snowman.

Keepers built the snowman for the pandas, who soon discovered the eyes wore made of Chinese dates and the nose of sugar cane - both panda delicacies.

Kangkang's romp with the snowman was the first time that the public had been able to see pandas for many months. The strain of stardom proved too much for their nervous systems, and they "retired" for a long rest.

The pandas were presented to Japan by the People's Republic of China, following a visit to Peking by Prime Minister Tanaka, and the establishman of relations in 1972.

Constant rumours of a possible mating between Kangkang and the 5-year old femala Lanlan keep the pandas in the local newspapers and television bulletins.
