Background: WEARY RESCUE WORKERS, WHO HAVE TOILED FOR THE PAST TWO DAYS TO RECOVER THE BODIES OF THOSE LOST IN THE AVALANCHE DISASTER IN THE SMALL SOUTH WALES MINING VILLAGE OF ABERFAN, CONTINUE THEIR EFFORTS THROUGHOUT LAST NIGHT AND TODAY (SUNDAY).

YESTERDAY, THEY WERE HAMPERED BY A STEADY DOWNPOUR OF RAIN WHICH THREATENED TO SET THE TWO-MILLION-TON MOUNTAIN OF SLUDGE MOVING AGAIN TO ENGULF MORE OF THE VILLAGE.

TODAY, HOWEVER, THE RAIN STOPPED AND IN THE BLEAK AUTUMN SUNSHINE RESCUE WORKERS BROUGHT MORE BODIES TO THE SURFACE FROM BENEATH TONS OF BLACK, OOZING SLUDGE. THE DEATH TOLL NOW STANDS AT 130, WITH AS MANY AS 100 MORE STILL MISSING.

HOPES WERE DASHED YESTERDAY (SATURDAY), WHEN POLICE AND RESCUE EXPERTS ABANDONED ALL EXPECTATIONS OF BRINGING OUT ANYONE ALIVE FROM THE CREEPING MASS OF SLUDGE, WHICH ENTOMBED A WHOLE SCHOOL AND DESTROYED A WHOLE GENERATION IN A MATTER OF MINUTES.

RESCUERS HAVE DREADED THE RAIN, WHICH WAS ORIGINALLY BLAMED FOR THE AVALANCHE. AS THEY WORKED, LOCAL OFFICIALS POSTED 40 LOOK-OUTS ON THE HILLSIDE ABOVE THE WORKERS TO GIVE WARNING IF THE 800 FOOT MOUNTAIN OF SLAG BEGAN TO MOVE AGAIN.

EARLY TODAY, LOORY LOADS OF TROOPS RUMBLED INTO ABERFAN TO ASSIST IN THE RESCUE OPERATIONS. ONE GROUP OF SOLDIERS UNCOVERED ABOUT HALF-A-DOZEN CHILDREN'S BODIES WITHIN MINUTES OF GETTING TO WORK WITH SHOVELS.

RESCUE WORK WILL CONTINUE, BUT IT IS FORECAST THAT IT WILL TAKE AT LEAST TWO WEEKS BEFORE A FINAL COUNT OF THE DEAD IS POSSIBLE.
