    Gabon's Democratic Party, the country's only political party, celebrated its sixth anniversary last week (12 March). In an anniversary message. President Albert Bernard Bongo promised an intensified fight against price rises on basic necessities.

    The anniversary was celebrated by a traditional parade in the capital. Libreville, at which the President took the salute. Also present was the visiting Niger head of state, President Hamani Diori.

    President Bongo's anniversary message suggested that Gabon would be taking a tougher attitude over trade in the future. "Gabonese oil, wood and manganese can be taken or left....we no longer want to be a milch-cow," the President declared. He anticipated additional revenue from higher prices for Gabonese raw materials, and this money would be used to improve industry, communications and services.
