  • Description

The Shah of Iran said in Caracas on Thursday (8 May) that oil prices should be increased to offset the effects of worldwide inflation.

Speaking to newsmen, after signing a joint communique with Venezuelan President Carlos Andres Perez calling for reforms of the international economic system, the Shah said that over the past eighteen months oil countries had suffered a 30 per cent fall in income because of growing international inflation.

President Perez supported Iran's proposal for the creation of a world institute to study energy problems and both leaders said their countries would increase fertiliser production to meet internal and Third World demands.

They talked about the Middle East problem. Both leaders supported a ban on nuclear arms in Latin America and a proposal that the Middle East should be recognised as a nuclear free-zone.

The Foreign Ministers of both countries signed a commercial agreement at the same time as the two leaders signed their joint declaration.

The Shah left Venezuela on Friday (9 May) to visit Mexico.
