    THE FIRST OF NINE STRIKE-BOUND NEWSPAPERS IN NEW YORK RESUMED PUBLICATION YESTERDAY (MONDAY)...THE 87TH DAY OF THE CITY'S NEWSPAPER STRIKE.THE AFTERNOON TABLOID-SIZED NEW YORK POST BROKE THE SOLID FRONT OF THE NEW YORK NEWSPAPER PUBLISHERS' ASSOCIATION AND PUBLISHED 500,000 COPIES OF A 96-PAGE PAPER.THEY WERE QUICKLY SOLD OUT.

    SEVERAL DEPENDENT PAPERS HAVE COME INTO EXISTENCE SINCE THE 'INTERNATIONAL TYPOGRAPHICAL UNION' (THE PRINTERS) WENT ON STRIKE, CLOSING FOUR NEW YORK PAPERS ON DECEMBER 8 AFTER A TWO-YEAR CONTRACT EXPIRED.THE PUBLISHERS OF THE OTHER FIVE PAPERS THEN CLOSED DOWN.THE POST WAS WELCOMED BY NEW YORKERS, WHO, UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS, READ OVER 5 1/2 MILLION COPIES OF THE NINE PAPERS EACH DAY.

    AT THE BARGAINING TABLE, JOINT NEGOTIATING SESSIONS CONTINUED WITH SOME PROGRESS REPORTED.BUT MAJOR ISSUES SUCH AS AUTOMATION, CONTRACT EXPIRATION DATE, WAGES AND HOURS...WERE STILL UNRESOLVED.
