COMPLETED THE FIRST EVER CROSSING OF THE ATLANTIC BY FREE-FLOATING BALLOON, WHEN THEY LANDED AT EVEREUX, 60 MILES (100 KILOMETRES) FROM PARIS, AFTER A ??? MILE (5,000 KM) JOURNEY. THOUSAND OF BRITONS TURNED OUT ON THURSDAY MORNING TO WATCH THE ??? SILVER BALLOON AS IT MADE ITS WAY THROUGH CLEAR BLUE SKIES OVER SOUTH WESTERN ENGLAND. BY MIDDAY THE BALLOONISTS WERE OVER THE CHANNEL, AND INITIALLY SAID THEY WERE HEADING FOR THE EIFFEL TOWER IN PARIS. FRENCH OFFICIALS IMMEDIATELY STARTED PREPARATIONS FOR A HERO'S WELCOME. FIFTY ONE YEARS AGO, AMERICAN AVIATOR CHARLES ??? LANDED AT LE BOURGET AIRPORT NORTH OF PARIS AFTER MAKING HISTORY'S FIRST TRANSATLANTIC FLIGHT.
