  • Description

THE VILLAGE OF BAARLE-NASSAU STANDS IN THE DUTCH PROVINCE NORTH BRABANT, A FEW KILOMETRES FROM THE BELGIAN BORDER, HOWEVER, WITHIN THE VILLAGE IS A BELGIAN ENCLAVE VILLAGE - OFFICIALLY CALLED BAARLE HERTOG -- AND THE RESULTING SITUATION IS A SORT OF PARODY OF NATIONALISM.

ALTHOUGH THE VILLAGERS OF BAARLE-NASSAU (INCLUDING BAARLE - HERTOG) GENERALLY BEHAVE AS MEMBERS OF ONE HOMOGENOUS COMMUNITY, THEY ARE STILL, IN FACT, SUBJECT TO THE LAWS AND CONVENTIONS OF EITHER BELGIUM AND HOLLAND, DEPENDING ON WHICH NATIONALITY CHOICE OR EVEN ACCIDENT HAS GIVEN THEM.

THERE ARE TWO HALLS, TWO POLICE FORCES, TWO TELEPHONE SYSTEMS. THE INHABITANTS ARE SUBJECT TO DIFFERENT INCOME-TAX RATES AND SEPARATE MILITARY SERVICE PROVISIONS. IN A CAFE ON THE MAIN STREET PEOPLE MAKE TELEPHONE CALLS IN BELGIUM AND GO TO THE TOILET IN HOLLAND, WHILE THE COLOURED BILLIARD BALLS ON A NEW BAIZE TABLE IN THE BAR ROLL BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES 10,000 TIMES A DAY.

THEE HAVE BEEN ATTEMPTS TO RESOLVE THE SITUATION IN BAARLE-NASSAU, BROUGHT ABOUT BY MEDIEVAL AGREEMENTS, BUT WHENEVER THE TWO HAVE GOT TOGETHER THE VILLAGERS HAVE REFUSED TO CO-OPERATE. THEY PREFER THE PECULIAR COMMUNITY AS IT IS. IT MAY BE A JOKE, BUT THE SITUATION BRINGS THE VILLAGERS SEVERAL ADVANTAGES, SUCH AS BEING ABLE TO PICK AND CHOOSE BETWEEN TWO DIFFERENT NATIONAL ECONOMIES WHEN IT SUITS THEM.
