  • Description

CHIEF ANOTHONY ENAHORO RETURNED TO LAGOS TODAY (THURSDAY) AFTER EXPLORATORY TALKS IN LONDON ON THE NIGERIAN CONFLICT. HE SAID AT THE AIRPORT THAT HE DOUBTED IF FEDERAL AUTHORITIES WOULD WELCOME A FOREIGN CHAIRMAN AND OBSERVERS AT NEXT WEEK'S FULLSCALE PEACE MEETING WITH BREAKAWAY BIAFRA IN KAMPALA. THE TWO SIDES HAVE AGREED TO MEET THERE ON MAY 23RD TO DISCUSS WAYS OF ENDING THE CIVIL WAR.

ANSWERING REPORTERS' QUESTIONS, CHIEF ENAHORO SAID HE DOUBTED VERY MUCH WHETHER IT WOULD BE ACCEPTABLE TO THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO ADMIT A FOREIGN CHAIRMAN AND OBSERVERS TO WHAT AFTER ALL WAS A MEETING ON NIGERIA'S INTERNAL PROBLEMS.

THE QUESTION OF FOREIGN OBSERVERS AND THE CHAIRMANSHIP FORM TWO POINTS OF A FOUR POINT AGENDA AGREED UPON IN LONDON. OTHERS ARE CONDITIONS FOR ENDING HOSTILITIES AND ARRANGEMENTS FOR A PERMANENT SETTLEMENT OF NIGERIA'S POLITICAL DIFFICULTIES IN THE WAKE OF TWO MILITARY COUPS.

CHIEF ENAHORO SAID FEDERAL AUTHORITIES WERE PREPARED TO NEGOTIATE PEACE WITH BIAFRA, BUT SECESSIONIST LEADERS MUST EQUALLY BE PREPARED TO GIVE UP THE INDEPENDENCE THEY HAD SEIZED LAST MAY.

CHIEF ENAHORO DROVE FROM THE AIRPORT TO DODAN BARRACKS, RESIDENCE OF NIGERIAN FEDERAL RULER, MAJOR GENERAL GOWON, TO REPORT ON HIS TRIP.
