ABATIELOS: "Our plan is that a formation of Government made by all political parties and organisations which fought against the junta should be made and this Government, which would represent all the political talents of the Greek people, will lead the country to free elections for a constitutional assembly in which the nature of the regime will be decided."

Background: Greek communist leader Tony Abatielos was among about 70 political prisoners freed on Friday (July 26) from the Korydalos Prison in Athens.

A crowd of about 2,000 relatives and supporters cheered and saluted the detainees as they emerged from the prison.

The prisoners were freed under an Amnesty Bill passed by Greece's new Karamanlis Government.

The Prime Minister Mr. Constantine Karamanlis returned from exile to Greece to form a Government this week on the invitation of the military leaders.

Mr. Abatielos has spent most of his adult life in prison for being a communist activist. On his release he told supporters a new Government should be formed comprised of all the political parties and organisations which had fought against the military junta.

A number of students, including many girls, were also among those released from Korydalos Prison.
