    Gambian President Sir Dawda Jawara was given a warm official airport reception and was cheered by thousands of people lining the streets of Taipei when he arrived in Taiwan on Monday (16 October) for an eight-day state visit.

    Vice-President C.K.Yen greeted the Gambian President on behalf of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek, who was reported unable to be at the airport because of a recent illness.

    In a speech at the airport, President Jawara said "this happy occasion will afford our two countries a further opportunity to consolidate and expand the fraternal and harmonious relations which have developed between us as well as to strengthen the fruitful cooperation which has characterised these relations in the past".

    During his visit to Taiwan President Jawara was scheduled to meet with Generalissimo Chiang and visit farms, military bases, and factories. He will also be holding talks with government officials on matters of mutual interest to Taiwan and Gambia.
