  • Description

NORTH KOREA AT TUESDAY (18 APRIL) THREATENED TO RESORT TO FORCE STOP THE UNITED NATIONS COMMAND USING MEETINGS OF THE MILITARY ARMISTICE COMMISSION IN THE TRUCE VILLAGE OF PANMUNJOM FOR "VICIOUS POLITICAL PROPAGANDA". AT TUESDAY'S MEETING BOTH SIDES HELD EACH OTHER RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DISORDER AT LAST FRIDAY'S (14TH APRIL) MEETING, WHICH ENDED WITH AN ANGRY NORTH KOREAN WALK-OUT.

THE CHIEF NORTH KOREAN DELEGATES, MAJOR-GENERAL PAK CHUNG KUK, TOLD TUESDAY;S MEETING THAT THE UNITED NATIONS COMMAND WAS TRYING TO DISRUPT THE 14-YEAR-OLD ARMISTICE AGREEMENT BY MAKING POLITICAL PROPAGANDA. THE ALLEGATIONS CAME AFTER THE NORTH KOREAN DELEGATION HAD WALKED OUT OF A MEETING ON FRIDAY OF LAST WEEK WHEN THE UNITED NATIONS COMMAND SHOWED A COLOUR FILM OF PRESIDENT JOHNSON'S VISIT TO KOREA LAST NOVEMBER.

GENERAL PAK SAID THEY WERE IN CONFERENCE ROOM AND NOT CINEMA, AND GENERAL RICHARD CICCOLELLA - AMERICAN SENIOR UNITED NATIONS COMMAND DELEGATE - SHOULD HAVE TAKEN PRESIDENT JOHNSON TO THE CONFERENCE INSTEAD OF SHOWING FILMS OF HIM. HE SAID THAT IF THE UNITED NATIONS COMMAND CONTINUED TO USE THE PLACE TO MAKE "VICIOUS POLITICAL PROPAGANDA," THEY SHOULD HAVE NO ALTERNATIVE BUT TO RESORT TO FORCE TO STOP IT.

GENERAL CICCOLELLA SAID THAT HE HAD SHOWN THE FILM TO REBUT A NORTH KOREAN CLAIM THAT THE SOUTH KOREAN PEOPLE WERE SUFFERING FROM "U.S. IMPERIALISM".

HE SAID THE CONFERENCE WAS BROKEN UP BY "HOODLUM TACTICS". ONE OF GENERAL PAK'S JUNIOR OFFICERS, "ACTING LIKE A WILD ANIMAL," HA PICKED AN ASH TRAY AND THREATENED TO THROW IT, HE CLAIMED. HE ALSO CHARGED THAT NORTH KOREAN SECURITY GUARDS WERE SEEN OUTSIDE THE CONFERENCE ROOM WITH PISTOLS IN HAND.

LAST FRIDAY'S MEETING FOLLOWED A SERIES OF BORDER CLASHES IN WHICH AT LEAST SEVEN NORTH KOREANS AND ONE SOUTH KOREAN WERE SAID TO HAVE BEEN KILLED.
