  • Description

In Saigon on Monday (22 December) members of the South Vietnamese National Convention met to endorse last month's agreement on Vietnamese reunification.

Some 276 members, representing all religious, social and political groups and including delegates from the state's armed forces, attended the three-day meeting in the former Independence Palace.

In a communique issued after the conference's unanimous vote, the Convention called on the Vietnamese people to increase production and to prepare for the election of a unified National Assembly for Vietnam. Election day, the communique said, should be turned into a "great festive day across the country".

President of Saigon's Provisional Revolutionary Government, Mr. Huynh Tan Phat, described the work of the Convention as a complete success in his closing speech. The delegates' decision was reflected in a vote of the National Assembly in Hanoi on the same day, meeting to approve the results of last month's joint reunification conference.

The Convention ended as Saigon prepared for its first peace time Christmas for a generation.
