  • Description

Baton-wielding police on horseback and in jeeps dispersed thousands of young anti-Vietnam conflict demonstrators and arrested 13 others outside the United States Embassy in The Hague today (Saturday). In the United Kingdom were two separate peace marches by members of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.

In Holland the young demonstrators also shouted slogans outside the Soviet and People's Republic of China Embassies. These included "Tibet for the Tibetans" and "Stop the nuclear tests". Some of the demonstrators let off smoke bombs. The demonstrators were marching from Rotterdam to Amsterdam via The Hague.

In the United Kingdom the Aldermaston marchers left Reading this morning en route to London. One group broke away from the main body after having voted for "direct action" at the site of what they said was a "regional seat for local government".

Police, who had been alerted, cordoned off the perimeter fence. The eighty demonstrators then staged a 30-minute sit-down outside the main entrance.

In London another group picketed the U.S. Embassy with poster slogans such as "Peace in Vietnam". The picket was supported by nearly 3,000 demonstrators. They marched eight miles through central London down Whitehall -- the nerve centre of Government administration -- past the Vietnamese Embassy and back to the U.S. Embassy in Grosvenor Square.
