  • Description

United States Vice-President Gerald Ford came out in support of President Nixon on Saturday (27 July) -- one hour after the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee voted to recommend President Nixon's impeachment.

Mr. Ford called a press conference outside his home near Washington. He said President Nixon should continue to argue his innocence and raised the question as to how well the House Judiciary Committee represented the Congress -- "the ultimate authority" in the United States.

Some of his answers to reporters' questions are transcribed here.

Vice President Ford would automatically assume office if President Nixon were impeached.
