  • Description

Australia's John Newcombe beat Swedish tennis star, Bjorn Borg, in Dallas, Texas, on Sunday (12 May) to win the World Championship tennis title and 50,000 U.S. dollars (about GBP 20,000 sterling) in prize money.

Newcombe, former Wimbledon champion, dropped the first set, but then hit superb form to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2.

The prize money for the victory -- to which was added a diamond ring, the use of a car for a year and 1,000 dollars (about GBP 350 sterling) worth of clothing for his wife -- took Newcombe's total earnings on the world championship circuit this year to 174,000 U.S. dollars (about GBP 72,500 sterling).

Borg -- who's 17, stunned the tennis world by defeating such veterans as Jan Kodes of Czechoslovakia and Arthur Ashe of the United States. He made a great start in this game racing to a 4-0 lead in the first game.

But Newcombe -- meeting Borg for the first time -- settled down the Swede's hard-hitting style and thrilled the capacity crowd of 9,200 by recovering and taking a firm grip on the game.

Newcombe, a former Wimbledon champion, settled down to Borg's hard-hitting style after the first game. But the young Swede battled strongly to keep Newcombe at bay.

The Australian veteran soon established a firm grip on the game. At one point, Borg strongly disagreed with a ruling by a linesman that the ball had bounced outside the line.

John Newcombe went on to win the next three games, and the match. The victory gave him the World Championship tennis title and fifty thousand dollars in prize money. So far this year, Newcombe has earned more than a hundred and seventy thousand dollars from world championship matches.
