  • Description

Prince Charles began the weekend performing a peace dance with the Blackfoot Indians in Canada -- and ended it with a game of polo back in England. He very nearly failed to join his team at all when his plane was delayed on Sunday, (10 July), and he arrived at the ground with less than three minutes to spare after a 50-mile dash from the airport in his Aston Martin.

SYNOPSIS: After a quick change of clothes the prince rode onto the Cowdray Park polo ground to play for his team, the Golden Eagles, against Songhai, who were led by Amadhu Yakabu of Nigeria. They're among ten teams competing for this year's Cowdray Park Gold Cup.

As the game began Prince Charles showed no sign of exhaustion after his six thousand mile flight from British Columbia on the west coast of Canada. His team is regarded as one of the main challengers for the Gold Cup after reaching the finals of another competition, the Warwickshire Cup.

Prince Charles was closely guarded by Yakabu of Songhai, a team which the Nigerian put together at the last moment for the tournament and which was not highly rated. The teams are divided into two leagues for the competition and those finishing at the top of the leagues play against each other for the Gold Cup.

The Prince himself is described by expert observers as the most improved player in his team. It was a far cry from Indian dancing in british Columbia, but Prince Charles had no apparent difficulty in adjusting and took a hand in scoring the goal that put his team ahead by four to two. In the end it was the Golden Eagles who won the game by nine goals to six and afterwards the Prince got straight back into his car to drive to London.
