  • Description

With the conservative Party returned to power in the General Election in Great Britain, October 8, Prime Minister Harold MacMillan, who had led the Party in an election for the first time, spoke to the nation October 9, when the Conservative majority over all the other parties combined was 100 with four results still to come.

At the Dissolution of Parliament the Conservatives had an overall majority of 54 seats.

Mr. MacMillan himself was re-elected for Bromley constituency with a majority of 15,452 votes over his labour opponent Mr. Albert Murray, this majority being 2,313 more than be secured in 1955.

In expressing the thanks of himself and his colleagues for the confidence shown in them, the Prime Minister repeated his earlier words at Bromley when he said that "despite the different parties, we are all one people".

He added that the result of the election showed that "class war is now obsolete". He hoped that in the next five years it would be possible to increase prosperity, to increase our contribution to the life of overseas countries, particularly within the Commonwealth, and to use his authority in the world to "so play our full part in the constant search for peace"
