  • Description

In Paris - soon to be the scene of the Summit talks - there opened recently an official Soviet exhibition of Russia art, the first to be shown in the French capital.

The paintings - solidly conventional in contrast with "revolutionary" styles of the West - are drawn from Tsarist period as well as from more recent years.

Dating from 1883 is Ivan Kramskoi's "Paysan a la Bride", showing a bearded man, and also from pre-1927 days, Isaac Levitan's "Apotheose de la Guerre". Serge Guerassimov's "Les Zaperologues ecrivant une Lettre an Sultan Turc" was painted in 1957.

Alexander Daineka's huge "La Prise de Petrograd" dates from 1928. Later works are Ian Osis' "Regatta", painted in 1958, and "Capout" showing Hitler's last days in Berlin - painted by three painters known collectively as Les Koukryniksky.
