  • Description

THE TOUR DE FRANCE THE WORLD'S TOUGHEST CYCLE RACE - BEGAN TODAY (TUESDAY) IN COLOGNE, WEST GERMANY, WHEN 130 CYCLISTS SET OUT ON THE THREE-WEEK MARATHON RIDE WHICH WILL TAKE THEM THROUGH FOUR COUNTRIES.

COLOGNE IS THE THIRD NON-FRENCH CITY TO BE CHOSEN AS A STARTING POINT FOR THE TOUR -- THE OTHERS HAVING BEEN AMSTERDAM AND BRUSSELS. THE RACE OF 2,547 MILES (4,100 KILOMETRES) WILL BE RIDDEN OVER 22 STAGES THROUGH WEST GERMANY, BELGIUM, SPAIN AND FRANCE.

THE RACE WILL END ON THE 14TH OF JULY - FRANCE'S NATIONAL DAY (BASTILLE DAY) - IN PARIS. BEFORE THEN, THE CYCLISTS WILL HAVE SPENT AN AVERAGE OF SIX OR SEVEN HOURS A DAY IN THE SADDLE, SNATCHING FOOD AND DRINK WHEN THEY CAN. EACH TEAM HAS A LEADER WHOM THE OTHER RIDERS SUPPORT BY PACING HIM IF HE FALLS BEHIND, OR BY CHASING ANY RIVALS WHO DRAW AHEAD.

THE OVERALL WINNER IS THE CYCLIST WITH THE HIGHEST AGGREGATE TIME. HE USUALLY GIVES HIS FINANCIAL REWARD AND OTHER PRIZES TO HIS TEAM-MATED. THE WINNER CAN LOOK FORWARD TO MAKING GBP20,000 OR MORE IN THE MONTHS FOLLOWING THE TOUR FROM PERSONAL APPEARANCES AND SPONSORING GOODS.

(RIK VAN LOOY OF BELGIUM LED THE FIELD AFTER TODAY'S FIRST STAGE OF THE RACE. HE WON A SPRINT FINISH AT LEIGE, BELGIUM, SOME 149 KILOMETRES FROM COLOGNE, AND THEN CONSERVED HIS LEAD IN THE AFTERNOON TIME TRIALS.)
