Mrs. Golda Meir, Prime Minister of Israel, launched the first Israeli built missile boat the INS "Reshof" at Israeli shipyards in Haifa on Monday.
The launching came just over two weeks after Israel first disclosed it was building a fleet of high-speed missile boats which would more than triple its strike range on the high seas.
At the launching ceremony Mrs. Meir emphasised that the ship was Israeli built from beginning to end and therefore symbolised the Zionist dream of Jewish labour in the Jewish homeland.
May the ship, she added, bring the day nearer when they would build ships which would carry goods instead of guns.
The steel hulled boats, which cost 10 million dollars (GBP 4 million sterling) are equipped with two 76 mm guns and seven Gabriel sea-to-sea missiles, and can cruise at 32 knots. (37 miles an hour).
Until now Israel's navy has been based on 12 French built gunboats, five of them spirited out of Cherbourg in 1969 after the French imposed a Middle East area embargo.
