INTRODUCTION: Seventeen year old Austrian Regina Sackl upset the odds with her first world cup victory in the women's slalom at Furano, Japan, on Saturday (26 February). She took first place over the favourite for the event -- her well-known team-mate, Anne-Marie Moser Proell. Third was Claudia Giordani of Italy.

First out of the gate was Sackl - number 15... The piste was packed down hard, and icy at the turns, and the young Austrian made a very fast run... In fact as it turned out, the fastest run of the competition, giving her an overall time of one minute 51.99 seconds. Her victory was another bo?st for the Austrian team which the previous day took first and second placings in the men's giant slalom.

Moser Proell - number 10 - was much more experienced than Sackl and tipped to win the event. It looked for a moment as though she would just beat her younger compatriot. However, she slowed fractionally at the end of the run, finishing with an overall time of one minute 52.13 seconds.

Giordani - number 11 - came close to snatching second place from the Austrian. On the second run, her time was faster. But overall Giordani fell back to third place with a time of one minute 52.76 seconds.
