  • Description

THE SOVIET FACTORY SHIP "PAVLOVA", WHICH FLED ARGENTINIAN WATERS AFTER ALLEGEDLY VIOLATING SHIPPING REGULATIONS, HAS ARRIVED IN MONTEVIDEO ACCORDING TO AN URUGUAY NAVAL INFORMATION SPOKESMAN.

THE SISTER SHIP OF THE "PAVLOVA" - THE "GULFSTRIM" - ALSO INVOLVED IN THE INCIDENT WAS HELD INCOMMUNICADO IN MAR DEL PLATA, ARGENTINA, WHILE OFFICIALS INVESTIGATED THE AFFAIR.

BOTH VESSELS WERE CAPTURED LAST FRIDAY (JUNE 21) WHEN ARGENTINA SAID, THEY HAD VIOLATED SHIPPING REGULATIONS, WITHIN ITS 200-MILE (320 KILOMETRE) TERRITORIAL LIMIT, BUT THE "PAVLOVA" ESCAPED DURING A STORM.

THE NAVAL INFORMATION OFFICERS SAID SHE HAD ENTERED TO CARRY OUT A "NORMAL OPERATION."
UNCONFIRMED REPORTS SAID THAT ARGENTINE NAVY SHIPS WERE WAITING OUTSIDE URUGUAYAN TERRITORIAL WATERS FOR THE "PAVLOVA" TO LEAVE MONTEVIDEO.

MEMBERS OF THE CREW OF THE "GULFSTRIM" SAID THEY WERE NOT IN ARGENTINIAN TERRITORIAL WATERS WHEN THEY WERE INTERCEPTED BY PATROL BOATS, ACCORDING TO INFORMED SOURCES IN MAR DEL PLATA.

THREE RUSSIAN DIPLOMATS ARRIVED IN MAR DEL PLATA FROM BUENOS AIRES AND WERE ALLOWED TO BOARD THE "GULFSTRIM."
ARGENTINIAN ADMIRALTY SOURCES SAID THE SHIPS HAD VIOLATED REGULATIONS WHICH STIPULATED THAT ALL FOREIGN VESSELS FISHING WITHIN ARGENTINE'S CLAIMED TERRITORIAL LIMITS MUST PAY AN INSPECTION FEE AND REPORT THEIR PRECISE GEOGRAPHICAL POSITION. SOVIET VESSELS HAVE NEVER FORMALLY RECOGNISED THE ARGENTINIAN TERRITORIAL CLAIM. MOST NATIONS RECOGNISE ONLY THE INTERNATIONALLY ACCEPTED 12-MILE LIMIT.
