  • Description

In the past year three Russian diplomats have been banished from Denmark on charges of spying. The last one was Sergei Smirnov, who was alleged to have sought information on Danish Radar installations.

When Smirnov reached home a few days ago he immediately went to the Kremlin to talk over the situation. The outcome was that the Russians decided to 'evict' Danish attache John Ranek.

Ranek, who had been in the Danish embassy in Moscow for ten years, was not accused of any default. The incident, however, stirred up a lot of bad blood between the two country's diplomatic corps: the Russian allege that trade relations and diplomatic liaison are scrappy.

At present Denmark has only 15 people in their Moscow embassy: the Russians have 62 in Copenhagen.

Mr. Ranek arrived this evening (Oct 15) at Copenhagen airport and was eagerly sought by interviewing Pressmen.
