  • Description

MINOR TREMORS CONTINUED TO SHAKE THE GREEK ISLANDS IN THE AEGEAN SEA YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) FOLLOWING TUESDAY'S VIOLENT EARTHQUAKE WHICH KILLED 20 PEOPLE, INJURED 40 AND LEFT HUNDREDS HOMELESS. THE EPICENTRE OF THE EARTHQUAKE WAS NEAR THE ISLANDS OF AYIOS EFSTRATIOS AND LEMNOS, WHERE A TOTAL OF ABOUT 2,000 HOUSES WERE DAMAGED.

THE GREEK ARMY GENERAL STAFF HAS DECLARED A STATE OF EMERGENCY ON AYIOS EFSTRATIOS AND ARMY UNITS ARE HELPING WITH RESCUE AND RELIEF WORK. SHIPS AND AIRCRAFT ARE SHUTTLING BETWEEN THE MAINLAND AND THE ISLAND WITH BLANKETS, TENTS, MEDICAL SUPPLIES AND FOOD. ALL THE HOUSES ON AYIOS EFSTRATIOS COLLAPSED, LEAVING AT LEAST 280 FAMILIES HOMELESS.

MOST OF THE ISLAND'S LIVESTOCK - ABOUT 5,000 SHEEP AND GOATS AND 400 CATTLE - WERE ALSO LOST. PANIC SWEPT MANY PLACES IN GREECE AS THE FIRST SHOCK GRIPPED THE MAINLAND AND ISLANDS FOR 22 SECONDS. IT WAS SUCCEEDED BY A NUMBER OF LESSER TREMORS.

SYNOPSIS: GREECE, IN ITS LONG HISTORY, HAS KNOWN MANY MOMENTS OF DESOLATION AND DESPAIR, BOTH MAN-MADE AND THE RESULT OF NATURAL DISASTERS. AND IT WAS NATURE AGAIN WHICH WRECKED HAVOC ON TUESDAY, WHEN AN EARTHQUAKE STRUCK THE MAINLAND AND THE TINY ISLANDS IN THE AEGEAN SEA LIKE THIS ONE, AYIOS EFSTRATIOS. TWENTY PEOPLE DIED, FORTY WERE INJURED, AND HUNDREDS WERE LEFT HOMELESS. ALL OF THE HOUSES ON AYIOS EFSTRATIOS COLLAPSED AND MOST OF THE ISLAND'S FIVE-THOUSAND SHEEP AND GOATS AND FOUR-HUNDRED CATTLE WERE LOST. A DEEPLY TRAGIC BLOW TO A PEOPLE WHO DO NOT LIVE VERY FAR FROM POVERTY AT THE BEST OF TIMES. IN CENTURIES PAST, THESE GREEKS WOULD HAVE ATTRIBUTED THE DISASTER TO THE GOD POSEIDON, KNOWN AS "THE EARTHSHAKER". TODAY, SCIENCE TELLS THEM THAT DAMAGE WAS SEVERE ON AYIOS EFSTRATIOS BECAUSE IT WAS NEAR THE EPICENTRE OF THE EARTHQUAKE. BUT THEIR SUFFERING IS NONE THE LESS FOR ALL OF THAT.

THESE PEOPLE DIED IN TWENTY-TWO SECONDS - THE LENGTH OF THE FIRST SHOCK, WHICH WAS FOLLOWED BY LESSER TREMORS. IN THOSE TWENTY-TWO SECONDS, PANIC SWEPT GREECE. BUT ON AYIOS EFSTRATIOS, AND ON THE NEARBY ISLAND OF LEUNOS, PEOPLE WERE KILLED AND MAIMED BY COLLAPSING BUILDINGS, OR LOST ALMOST EVERYTHING THEY OWNED. THE GREEK MILITARY REGIME HAS DECLARED A STATE OF EMERGENCY.
