  • Description

While somewhere in Israel the country's air force demonstrated its ability to protect the airspace over Israel, Jerusalem on Thursday (17 July) saw its biggest ever-defence exercises -- the ability of the authorities to protect the civil population of this type of area, in time of war.

Civil defence in Israel has recently turned more and more from a homeguard type f activity to proper arm of the defence forces.

During the six-day war of 1967, according to a spokesman of the haga, as civil defence is known, no wounded person in Jerusalem lay longer than five minutes before help arrived, no fire spread to large dimensions, and no-one was buried under the debris for any length of time.

Men of the haga are much younger than they used to be, and it's officers are now army-trained commanders.

In the course of the exercises the units demonstrated various methods of fire-fighting, including an asbestos-clad soldier who walked through a fierce blaze to rescue a mock-wounded person. Also demonstrated were various methods of rescuing wounded from damaged houses.

The exercises were supervised by several haga commanders, including Lieutenant-Colonel Simcha Shkadi, area commander of the Jerusalem haga.
