    DOCTORS WHO YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) CARRIED OUT A HEART TRANSPLANT OPERATION IN LONDON GAVE A PRESS CONFERENCE THIS MORNING. THEY SAID THE OPERATION HAD GONE - "AS WELL AS COULD BE EXPECTED". THE PATIENT WAS DESCRIBED AS "FIT".

    THE LEADER OF THE TRANSPLANT TEAM OF 18 WAS SOUTH AFRICAN BORN MR. DONALD ROSS, AGES 45. MR. ROSS SAID THE TEAM WERE HAPPY TO HAVE PIONEERED THE OPERATION IN BRITAIN AND ADDED THAT THEY WERE SATISFIED IT WAS NOT TOO SOON FOR IT TO BE CARRIED OUT. NINE TRANSPLANT HAVE BEEN MADE IN OTHER COUNTRIES.

    THE PATIENT, MR. FREDERICK WEST, IS A 45-YEAR OLD FATHER OF TWO CHILDREN WHO HAD BEEN GIVEN LESS THAN A MONTH TO LIVE UNLESS HE UNDERWENT A HEART TRANSPLANT. HE REGAINED CONSCIOUSNESS 90 MINUTES AFTER THE OPERATION, BUT THE DOCTORS SAID HE HAD NOT YET SPOKEN AS HE HAD A TUBE IN HIS TROAT.

    NEWSMEN CROWDED INTO A SMALL CONFERENCE ROOM TO MEET THE TEAM. MR.ROSS WAS FLANKED BY LEADING COLLEAGUES - MR. KEITH ROSS, 40 AND UNRELATED, MR. DONALD LONGMORE, 40, DR. ALAN GILSTON, 39, DR. EUNICE LICKEY AND DR. KEITH JEFFERSON.

    MR. DONALD ROSS SAID HE PLANNED THREE MORE HEART TRANSPLANTS AND THE RESULTS WOULD BE ASSESSED BEFORE A COMBINED HEART-AND-LUNG OPERATION WAS ATTEMPTED.

    THE DONOR OF THE HEART WAS AN IRISH BUILDING WORKER WHO WAS FATALLY INJURED IN A FALL.
