Background: MORE THAN HALF-A-MILLION JAPANESE DEMONSTRATED IN TOKYO ON SUNDAY (FEB 27) AGAINST THE RISE IN COMMODITY PRICES, TRAIN AND BUS FARES. THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE CALLED BY THE JAPAN SOCIALIST PARTY AND THE FEDERATION OF GENERAL COUNCILS OF LABOUR UNIONS.

THEY CLAIMED THAT THE INCREASES WOULD BRING IMMENSE HARDSHIP TO MILLIONS OF WORKERS WHO ARE IN THE LOWER INCOME BRACKET, AND FURTHER MORE RESULT IN A NATIONWIDE CHAOS.

THE INCREASES RANGE FROM FIVE TO EIGHT PER CENT MORE THAN THE NORMAL CHARGE. THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT HAS APPROVED THE INCREASES. PLACARDS DENOUNCING THE GOVERNMENT'S APPROVAL WERE PROMINANTLY DISPLAYED BY THE DEMONSTRATORS, WHICH INCLUDED HOUSEWIVES AND OFFICE GIRLS.

THE DEMONSTRATIONS WERE ALSO EXTENDED TO THE 1964 TOKYO OLYMPICS VILLAGE. HERE SOME 200,000 PEOPLE GATHERED TO LISTEN TO SPEECHES BY MR. KOZO SAKI, SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE JAPAN SOCIALIST PARTY AND UNION LEADERS ACCUSING THE GOVERNMENT OF CREATING UNREST AND INSTABILITY AMONG THE WORKERS.
