  • Description

EUROPE'S FIRST NUCLEAR-POWERED CARGO SHIP, "OTTO HAHN", WAS LAUNCHED AT STATE-OWNED SHIPYARDS AT KIEL, IN WESTERN GERMANY, TODAY (SATURDAY).

THE VESSEL WILL NOT SAIL ON ITS MAIDEN VOYAGE UNTIL 1967, BECAUSE IT WILL TAKE ABOUT THREE YEARS TO BUILD AND INSTALL THE MODERN WATER-COOLED ATOMIC REACTOR MADE BY TWO WEST GERMAN FIRMS.

THE SHIP, WHICH HAS A DISPLACEMENT OF 26,000 TONS, AND A LOAD CAPACITY OF 15,000 TONS, WILL COST ABOUT 53 MILLION MARKS (GBP4,700,000).

THE NUCLEAR REACTOR ALONE WILL COST 30 MILLION MARKS (GBP2,700,000), ABOUT HALF OF WHICH WILL BE PAID BY EURATOM, THE EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY, FORMED BY THE SIX COMMON MARKET COUNTRIES.

DESIGNED FOR TRANSPORTING IRON ORE AND FOR NUCLEAR RESEARCH PURPOSES, THE FREIGHTER WILL CARRY ABOUT 60 CREW AND 50 SCIENTISTS.

IT WILL BE THE THIRD NUCLEAR PROPELLED NON-MILITARY VESSEL IN THE WORLD, FOLLOWING THE AMERICAN CARGO AND RESEARCH SHIP "SAVANNAH", AND THE SOVIET ICE-BREAKER, "LENIN".

THE "SAVANNAH" ARRIVES IN WEST GERMANY NEXT WEEK TO DOCK AT BREMERHAVEN AND HANBURG DURING A CURRENT TOUR OF EUROPEAN PORTS.
