  • Description

The banned Pan African Congress of Azania -- South Africa -- has been holding a conference in the? northern town of Arusha in Tanzania.

SYNOPSIS: Delegates who gathered at the Conference Centre hoped to reconcile difference which flared into a knife fight during a PAC meeting in Tanzania last November. Diplomatic sources say six PAC members were taken to hospital with stab wounds.

One hundred and fifty PAC members and 50 observers took part in last week's meeting and PAC Administrative Secretary Elias Ntloedibe said the purpose of the conference was to unify the organisation and establish new guidelines for the fight against apartheid. The PAC of Azania has external headquarters in Tanzania and held its last conference in 1962, at Maseru in Lesotho.

Diplomatic sources quoted by Reuters news agency say that 50 PAC members who are opposed to Acting President Potlake Lebalo broke away from the organisation early this year. Mr. Lebalo was a prominent figure at the Arusha conference -- standing in for the time being since the death from cancer in detention in Kimberley, South Africa of PAC President Robert Sobukwe. The Possibility of a mergen with a rival South African nationalist movement was on the conference agenda.

The organisation of African Unity Liberation Committee last week urged the PAC and the African National Congress (South Africa) to unite and a sub-committee was asked to bring them together. Among the speakers in Arusha was Soweto Student Council representative Khotso Seatlholo.
