  • Description

IN BONN, A BIG DEMONSTRATION BY OVER 20,000 GERMAN EX-PRISONERS OF WAR TODAY (SUNDAY) IN PROTEST AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT'S REFUSAL TO GRANT THEM HIGHER COMPENSATION. THE MEN, KNOWN AS THE "LATE HOME-COMERS", REPRESENTED MANY THOUSANDS OF GERMAN SOLDIERS KEPT BACK IN RUSSIA FOR UP TO 10 YEARS AFTER THE END OF WORLD WAR II.

THEY CARRIED BANNERS WITH SLOGANS LIKE "WE SEEK THE FATHERLAND'S GRATITUDE," AND "RETURNED PRISONERS OF WAR ACCUSE."
THE DEMONSTRATION, ORGANIZED BY THE FEDERATION OF FORMER PRISONERS OF WAR, WAS A PRELUDE TO A SIMILAR MARCH PLANNED FOR TUESDAY WHEN CRIPPLED EX-SOLDIERS WAR WIDOWS WILL PARADE THROUGH THE CAPITAL. BOTH THE FORMER P.O.W.S AND THE WAR VICTIMS WANT MORE MONEY FROM CHANCELLOR LUDWIG ERHARD'S TWO-MONTH-OLD GOVERNMENT, WHICH IS FACING ITS FIRST SERIOUS CHALLENGE OVER THE ISSUE.

THE CHANCELLOR, ARCHITECT OF WEST GERMANY'S POST-WAR ECONOMIC RECOVERY, IS OPPOSING ANY INCREASE WHICH MIGHT IMPERIL HIS POLICY OF FINANCIAL STABILITY THROUGH WAGE AND PRICE RESTRAINT.
