    The North Korean Vice President Kang Ryang-UK has begun talks in Katmandu with Nepalese leaders. Mr. Kang, who arrived Nepal for a five day visit on Friday (3 March), is the highest ranking North Koran leader to visit the Himalayan kingdom. On Sunday (5 March) Mr. Kang will be received by King Birendra. The Nepal trip is latest in a series of goodwill visits aimed at improving North Korea's image with the non-communist countries of Asia. Thursday (2 March), the North Korean Vice Premier Kong Jin Tae was in Kuala Lumpur for talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Hussein Onn.

    Trips to non-communist countries are rare events for North Korean leaders. During his talks with Datuk Hussein, Mr. Kong explained his government's stand on the reunification of Korea. The Malaysian leader expressed the hope that the two Korea's would achieve unification according to the desires of the people on the two sides. Both sides also discussed the non-aligned movement and the improvement of bilateral trade. (SEQ 1-4)
    Later the two leaders toured a rubber research station where they watched a demonstration of budding, yield stimulation, and the tapping of rubber trees.

    Non concrete agreements were reached during the talks, but both leaders expressed the hope that relations between the two countries would continue to improve.

    An invitation to visit North Korea has been accepted by the Malaysian Foreign Minister Tengku Rithauddeen. (SEQ 5-7)
