    Returning from a last minute mission to heal the split in the Arab world over Middle East peace proposals, Libyan leader Muammer Gaddafi was feted by Tripoli crowds when he opened the five-nation conference on Arab unity on Wednesday (August 5).
    Though his efforts to bring the Iraqis to the conference table were unsuccessful--Iraq continues to oppose Jordanian and Egyptian acceptance of the American Middle East peace plan--Colonel Gaddafi said later that the talks had gone very well.
    Just before the conference started, Col. Gaddafi told the cheering crowd that Libya's Revolutionary Command Council believed that the Arab world would be strengthened as a result of the Tripoli conference.
    Though no official communique was issued at the end of the conference on Thursday, and although the American peace plan was apparently not discussed, Col. Gaddafi said he was well satisfied with progress as he left the final session:
