  • Description

Swedish tennis champion Bjorn Borg has retained his French singles tennis title by defeating Argentine Guillemo Vilas in Paris on Sunday (15 June). The 19-year-old champion dominated the finals and won all sets impressively by 6-2, 6-3, 6-4.

The match was the third shortest French final since World War Two. Only in 1973 and 1970 were the finals briefer.

Boro is now preparing for Wimbledon, feeling fresh and confident after this win. But he has decided to skip the Nottingham tournament. Last year Borg want to Wimbledon, the world's premier tournament, a brilliant but utterly worn-out player after a gruelling month during which he won the two top clay court titles, the French and the Italian championships. He lost in the third round at Wimbledon to Egyptian left-hander Ismail El???afei.

In Sunday's match, the Argentine gave away points easily. Borg is his doubles partner and the two have played together many times.

Boro led 3-1 in the first set. Vilas broke back, but conceded the next seven games. At 1-5 in the third, Vilas saved a match point and the crowd cheered to support him. Vilas fought to 4-5 before being beaten.

Winner of the Women's title was Chris Evert, the young American player who won the title in Paris last year.
