  • Description

Qatar's Foreign Minister, Sheikh Suhaim bin Hamed al-Thani, visited London on his way to the United Nations in New York.

It was a private visit, but included some formal calls. On Monday he visited Qatar's Embassy in Reeves Mews, which was opened six months ago. In the afternoon he spent some time at the Foreign Office, talking - again privately - to Sir Alec Douglas-Home.

On Tuesday the Minister lunched at the Savoy with Lord Balnisl, the British Defence Minister, and other engagements included a reception on Wednesday, given by the Qatar Ambassador.

SYNOPSIS: This building in the heart of London houses the Embassy of Qatar - one of the World's newest and richest states.

It has only been open for six months, so Qatar's Foreign Minister, Sheikh Suhaim bin Hamed al-Thani, broke his journey to the United Nations to pay a visit.

Qatar became independent a year ago. But although it broke off a treaty under which Britain controlled its foreign and defence affairs, the new state immediately signed a new treaty.

Apart from the visit to his country's Embassy, the Sheikh fitted several important meetings into his stay. They included a lunch with Lord Balniel, the British Minister of State for Defence, and a reception at the Dorchester Hotel given by the Qatar Ambassador, Sheikh Ahmad bin Saif al-Thani.

One of the most important meetings was at the Foreign Office, though again the details of discussions were strictly off the record.

There the Sheikh met Sir Alec Douglas-Home, the British Foreign Secretary. Ties between the two countries are strong, and Britain is easily the biggest supplier of Qatar's imports.
