New York.....Britain's Princess Margaret, sister to Queen Elizabeth, climaxed her United States visit at a dazzling benefit ball at New York's Waldorf Astoria Hotel the night of November 19th.
The Princess, wearing $350,000 in diamond jewellry spent three and a half hours at the charity ball. The $100 a ticket ball was for the benefit of the Churchill scholarship fund. Margaret and her husband, Lord Snowdon, were said to look amazingly fresh after their hectic day of sightseeing about the city. The couple danced the first number to open up the ball.
Margaret wore a powder blue organza gown, embroidered with crystals. Her jewellry was said to be stunning. Not since Queen Elizabeth's 1957 had New York society seen such a display. An antique diamond tiara, diamond collar with matching bracelet and diamond drop earrings were accompanied by royal decorations consisting of miniatures of her father and mother surrounded by diamonds. Lord Snowdon, as did all the men among the 1,100 guests, wore white tie and tails.
Scottish pipers from Long Island piped the Royal party to the dias decorated with Margaret's favourite flower, the Tropicana Rose. She was applauded politely by the diners, who included members of the top society families of the country-- the Vanderbilts, whitneys, Huttons, Rockefellers in addition to Prince Amyn Aga Khan and Prince and Princess Paolo Borghese. Others at the ball included Governor of New York, Nelson A. Rockefeller and Senator Jacob K. Javits. The five course dinner was built around a main course of grilled British beef.
