Background: NEARLY 200 FRENCH PARATROOPERS, 50 OF THEM VETERANS OF THE ALGERIAN WAR, WERE BACK IN ALDERSHOT - "HOME OF THE BRITISH ARMY" - ON APR 6 AFTER TAKING PART IN BATTLE EXERCISES ON DARTMOOR WITH MEN OF THE 1ST BATTALION, THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT. AND AFTER THE BITTER WEATHER WITH WINDS GUSTING UP TO 70 M.P.H. AND RAIN AND HAIL LASHING DOWN, THE FRENCH "LES PARAS" AND BRITISH "RED DEVILS" ENJOYED THE CALMER WEATHER OF THE HAMPSHIRE COUNTRYSHIRE.

NEWEST MEMBERS OF THE FRENCH UNIT - THE 11TH PARACHUTE DIVISION STATIONED AT NANCY - RECEIVED SPECIAL INSTRUCTION FROM MEMBERS OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE TEAM AT THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT HEADQUARTERS.

HOWEVER, WHEN THE INSTRUCTION PERIOD WAS OVER THE FRENCH AND BRITISH SOLDIERS FORMED SCRATCH SIDES FOR A GAME OF FOOTBALL. IN THE EVENING THE SOLDIERS REMAINED TOGETHER - FOR A WELCOME GLASS OF BEER IN AN ENGLISH INN.

DURING THE "BATTLE" ON DARTMOOR THE FRENCHMEN HAD THEIR BRITISH COUNTERPARTS ADMIRING THEIR FITNESS, AND SPEED WITH WHICH THEY COVERED 20 MILES ACROSS THE CENTRE OF THE MOOR - SOME OF THE MOST RUGGED COUNTRY IN ENGLAND - DURING THE NIGHT.
