  • Description

Former world heavyweight boxing champion Mohammed Ali -- formerly known as Cassius Clay -- fought Argentina's Alberto Lowell in a no decision five-round match in Sao Paulo on Saturday (18 September) night before a crowd of 15,000 at the lbirapuera Stadium.

The "no contest" fight followed immediately after a five-round fight on Friday (17 September) night between Ali and his sparring partner Alonso Johnson.

Earlier on Saturday, Ali had been honoured by the Islamic religious centre in Sao Paulo, but had declined to pray with the 300 Moslems present. "I came to Brazil to fight and not in a religious sense," he said, explaining that Moslems were against violence.

Of his next fight with world champion Joe Frazier, Ali said, "After I beat Joe Frazier next January or February, I will convert him to the Moslem religions."
