  • Description

Police and British anti-Common Market demonstrators clashed on board a cross channel ferry at Calais on Sunday (16 April).

The 250-300 demonstrators were part of the "Keep Britain Out of the Common Market" movement. They had gone to Calais to take part in a demonstration with French trade unionists.

The Interior Ministry had instructed the local prefect to stop the demonstrators from landing. As the ferry neared the quayside, demonstrators waved banners and chanted anti-Common Market slogans. Some thirty policemen went on board as soon as the ferry docked and scuffles broke out. Police used truncheons, while on policeman was thrown overboard, landing on a gangway without injury.

No one was seriously injured and the demonstrators were forced to stay on board until the ferry made its return trip to Britain. The British consul has been asked to lodge a formal complaint with the French authorities over the incident.

SYNOPSIS: Over two-hundred demonstrators from the "Keep Britain Out of the Common Market" movement arrived in Calais aboard a cross-channel ferry on Sunday to Join French trade unionists in an anti-Common Market demonstration. Police rushed on board to prevent them from disembarking.

Scuffles broke out between some thirty police and the demonstrators, as the police tried to clear the ferry of stickers, banners and signa. The French Interior Ministry, who had earlier said they would not tolerate such a landing, on Saturday ordered the local prefect to prevent the demonstrators from landing. As the scuffles continued, another one-hundred and fifty riot police armed with ???ten guns were rushed to the dock-side.

No one was seriously injured, although police used truncheons and one policeman was thrown overboard, landing on a gangway without injury. The police stayed on board until all the non-demonstrators disembarked, and then they went back ashore. The gangway was then lifted to isolate the demonstrators on the ferry until it made its return trip to Britain.
