    Background: The funeral has taken place in Yugoslavia on Monsignor Josef Pogacnik, the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church in Slovenia. He died of a heart attack while returning from mass in Ljubljana on 24 March. He was aged seventy six.

    SYNOPSIS: The city of Ljubljana was in mourning when Monsignor Pogacnik was buried on Friday (28 March).

    Members of the clergy and the Archbishop's family were joined at the funeral by state representatives. Over the years, Monsignor Pogacnik had done much to improve relations between the state and the Roman Catholic Church in Slovenia. and he was to receive a state medal for his work. The Mayor of Ljubljana, representatives of the Socialist League in Slovenia and the President of the Government Commission for Religion were among these who joined the funeral procession. Hundreds of local people lined the streets as the cortege headed towards the Catholic Cathedral.

    A successor to Monsignor Pogacnik as Archbishop of Slovenia had already been appointed. He is Monsignor Sustar who was nominated by Pope John Paul II when Monsignor Pogacnik reached seventy five, the compulsory retiring age.

    The funeral mass was conducted by the Pope's envoy to Yugoslavia and its was also attended by representatives of the religious denominations. They heard several tributes paid to Monsignor Pogacnik, especially for his work in improving the church-state relationship.
