  • Description

DAMASCUS.... THE COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE SYRIAN ARMY, MAJOR-GENERAL ZAHREDDIN, GAVE A NEWS CONFERENCE MAR. 30; AND ANNOUNCED THAT THE ARMY COMMAND - WHICH OUSTED THE GOVERNMENT TWO DAYS EARLIER - HAS DECIDED TO TRAY ALL "AGENTS AND PLOTTERS AGAINST THE STATE". THEY WOULD APPEAR BEFORE A "PEOPLE'S COURT" FORMED OF MILITARY AND CIVILIAN MEMBERS.

ASKED WHETHER MEMBERS OF DR. DAWALIBI'S DEPOSED NET WOULD BE TRIED, ZAHREDDIN SAID THAT THE NAMES OF THE ACCUSED WOULD BE MADE PUBLIC WHEN THE TRIALS BEGAN. HE SAID THAT THE GOVERNMENT OF DR. DAWALIBI HAD MISAPPLIED THE LAWS. ZAHREDDIN SAID THAT MAJOR ABDUL HAMID SERRAJ, A FORMER UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC MINISTER FOR THE SYRIAN REGION, WOULD STILL BE COMMITTED FOR TRIAL.

DIPLOMATIC OFFICIALS IN DAMASCUS SAID THAT MANY PEOPLE - INCLUDING EX-PRESIDENT EL-KUDSI AND DR. DAWALIBI - HAD BEEN ARRESTED IN DAMASCUS SINCE THE COUP. THE OFFICIALS SAID THAT THE SWEEPING ARRESTS INCLUDED ALL MEMBERS OF DR. DAWALIBI'S CABINET WITH THE EXCEPTION OF RASHAD BARMADA, THE MINISTER OF DEFENCE.

MR. BARMADA HAD BEEN MENTIONED AS A POSSIBILITY FOR THE PREMIERSHIP JUST BEFORE THE COUP.
