  • Description

EVERY AUTUMN IS ROUND-UP AT BUFFALO PARK, A SANCTUARY ON THE BORDER OF CANADA'S NORTHWEST TERRITORY AND THE PROVINCE OF ALBERTA, WHERE THE WORLD'S LARGEST HERD OF WILD BUFFALO ROAM UNFENCED AND PROTECTED IN THEIR NATURAL HABITAT.

THE BUFFALO, OR MORE PROPERLY THE BISON, WAS ONCE THE LORD OF THE NORTH AMERICAN PLAINS - AND FROM GREAT SLAVE LAKE, IN CANADA'S NORTHWEST, TO MEXICO, AN ESTIMATED 60 MILLION GRADED ON THE PRAIRIES.THE BISON HAD FEW NATURAL ENEMIES, AND EVEN THE PLAINS INDIANS ONLY KILLED THEM TO FULFIL THEIR NEEDS FOR FOOD AND HIDES.

THE COMING OF THE WHITE MAN CHANGED THAT: THE BISON WAS NO MATCH OR FAST HORSES AND LONG RIFLES.BY 1890, THE WANTON KILLING OF THE BUFFALO HAD REDUCED THE ONCE VAST HERDS ALMOST TO THE POINT OF EXTINCTION.

IN 1922, THE CANADIAN AUTHORITIES DISCOVERED THE LAST KNOWN HERD OF WOOD BUFFALO AND DECLARED THE BUFFALO PARK AREA A PROTECTED RESERVE.WITHIN A FEW YEARS SOME 7 THOUSAND PLAINS BUFFALO HAD BEEN MOVED THERE TO STRENGTHEN THE HERD AND INFUSE NEW BLOOD.TODAY, THE 17 THOUSAND SQUARE MILE RESERVATION BOASTS A HERD OF 14 THOUSAND BUFFALO, WHO ARE AS WELL TENDED AS ANY DOMESTIC FAR ANIMALS.

A CAREFUL MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME REACHES A CLIMAX EACH YEAR WITH THE ROUND-UP.PARK WARDENS AND RANGERS HERED THE ANIMALS FROM DISTANT AREAS TO THE MANAGEMENT STATIONS IN THE PARK FOR TESTING AND INOCULATION.HORSES, TRACTORS, TRUCKS AND HELICOPTERS ARE USED TO MUSTER THE BUFFALO, TWO OR THREE THOUSAND AT TIME, TO THE CORRALS.

THE SELECTION PROGRAMME IS RIGID AND ALL OFF-TYPE ANIMALS OR CRIPPLES ARE REMOVED FROM THE HERD.IN THIS WAY, A PROPER BALANCE OF THE HERD BY AGE AND SEX IS MAINTAINED.IN ALL PHASES, ONLY THE LATEST SCIENTIFIC AND ANIMAL HUSBANDRY TECHNIQUES ARE USED, AND OVER THE YEARS THEY HAVE ENSURED THAT THE NORTH AMERICAN BUFFALO'S PRESERVATION WILL BE FOR POSTERITY.
