  • Description

At least three people were killed after a ferry boat was in collision with a Soviet Freighter in a narrow channel near Vancouver in Canada, on Sunday (2 August).

The collision took the lives of a mother, her baby, and a teenage girl, but as no detailed passenger lists was available authorities said the death toll could be higher.

About 500 passengers were aboard the ferry Queen of Victoria when it was hit by the 10,400-ton freighter Sergei Yesinen. The collision occurred as the two ships travelled in opposite directions through Active Pass, a narrow treacherous channel of strong currents between the Canadian mainland and Southern Vancouver Island. Passengers said the freighter hit the ferry amidships ripping a 40 foot (12 metre) gash in its hull and smashing eight cars on a lower deck. About 150 cars were on board the ferry. When the Queen of Victoria finally berthed the boat had a ten degree list and passengers were questioned about the accident by police and port authorities.

Six injured people were taken to hospital as soon as the boat arrived at Vancouver island.
