  • Description

More than 50 petrol bombs were thrown at troops as rioting erupted for the second night in succession in a Catholic area of Belfast early Saturday morning (1 August).

About three hundred rioters erected a barricade of burning buses and lorries and youth used metal tipped arrows against the troops who retaliated with C.S. riot gas. The Army's new water cannon imported from West Germany was used for the first time but apparently had little effect.

A cinema in the Catholic New Lodge Road area was set alight by a mob and a police station and two houses damaged by explosions. Six arrests were made during the night.

A searchlight used by the police was partially made useless by rioters who reflected the light back with a mirror.

In the previous night's rioting a youth was shot dead while he was about to hurl a fire bomb. An army marksman opened fire on a petrol bomber on Saturday but no casualties were reported.
