  • Description

President Anwar Sadat marked the seventh anniversary of the start of the 1967 Six-Day war with Israel on Wednesday (5 June) with a pledge to fulfil Egypt's mission to free all occupied Arab lands.

He was addressing troops at Ismailia during the second day of his three-day tour of the Suez Canal Zone.

"As we promised each other last year to cross the Canal, we promise to meet on the same day next year after fulfilling our mission. The battle will only be completed when every inch of Arab territory is liberated and Palestinian rights are fully restored," the President said.

He was underscoring his terms for a permanent peace in the Middle East in forcible words a week before the arrival of United States' President Nixon on 12 June for a three-day visit.

Throughout President Sadat's tour of the Suez area this message was re-iterated during a series of speeches at Suez, in the Sinai Desert on the Eastern Bank of the Canal and at a special ceremony in the military cementery at Ismailia town.

But the President also spoke of reconstruction plans for the area which has suffered terribly during seven years of fighting. In Port Said he told the people of the town that their homes would be re-built by 6 October -- the first anniversary of the beginning of the last conflict with Israel. He said that all refugees from the Canal area -- estimated at one million -- would be re-settled within five months. He urged the people of Ismailia to help in the reconstruction of their town and said that tunnels would be dug under the Canal linking it with the Sinai.

The President was accompanied throughout his tour by War Minister Field Marshal Ahmed Ismail.
