  • Description

The rich and influential leaders of the western world ended a three-day meeting in the Turkish resort of Cesme on the Aegesn coast on Sunday (27 April).

They are members of the most exclusive club in the West -- the self-styled Bilderberg Conference, which allows them a chance of totally private discussions.

Newsmen were barred and Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands -- the sponsor of the Conference, which first met in 1954 -- said this allows delegates to speak freely ... without fear of publicity.

One-hundred-and-seven delegates from 16 countries discussed inflation and its effects, East-West relations and efforts to resolve the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Among the delegates -- who were not allowed to take their wives -- were NATO Secretary-General Dr. Joseph Luns, British Chancellor of the Exchequer Denis Healey, French Banker Baron Edmond de Rothschild, David Rockefeller of the Chase manhattan Bank and Swedish premier Olof Palme.

They also included two women -- Britain's opposition leader Margaret Thatcher and Mrs. Gulten Kazgan, an economics lecturer at Istanbul University.

Countries represented were Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, West Germany, Iceland, Italy, Holland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Britain and the United States.
