  • Description

Israeli fighter-bombers attacked Palestinian refugee camps in the Lebanon on Thursday (16 May) killing 48 people and injuring 184 in reprisal for the previous day's Palestinian attack on Israeli school children.

Three Palestinian guerrillas hold more than 100 Israeli school children in a school at Ma'alot, a town near the Lebanese border. The guerrillas demanded the release of 26 Israeli-held Palestinian prisoners. Israeli soldiers stormed the building when officials said the guerrillas time demands could not be mt, and 16 school children were killed and 70 wounded. Another eleven children have since died from their wounds.

Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Dayan said Thursday's reprisal air raids were carried out because the only way to deal with the guerrillas was to make it quite clear they would be killed.

The Palestinian News Agency, WAFA, said Israeli Skyhawk and Phantom 'planes strafed the camps with napalm canisters as well as bombs, rockets and machine-gun fire.

The Israeli planes attacked villages and seven refugee camps in Lebanon. The Nabatieh refugee camp in the mountains about 35 miles (55kms) south of the Lebanese Capital Beirut and the camp at Ein Al-Helweh near the biblical town of Sidon were the worst hit. 25 people were reported killed at Nabatieh and 13 at Ein Al-Helweh. Another 10 people died in the other attacks.

A spokesman for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestinian admitted the Organisation's headquarters and general command had been destroyed.

The Lebanese Government denounced the attack as a premeditated massacre. It will complain to the United Nations's Security Council. Egyptian Foreign Minister Ismail Fahmy warned that Arab States would not sand idly by in the face of Israeli acts of aggression.

On Friday (17 May), Israeli commandos crossed the Lebanese border and blew up an Arab terrorist base and Israeli jets attacked another Palestinian refugee camp.
