  • Description

On the 23rd and 24th December, the South Vietnamese 7th Airborne Battalion (ARVN) retook the village of Sambuor Meas, on the road between Prey Totung and the Mekong River.

Sambuor Meas was occupied in November by the North Vietnamese 272nd Regiment which almost annihilated the 5th Cambodian Airborne Battalion along the banks of the Mekong. Among those taken prisoner by the North Vietnamese at the time was Lee Yosep, a Visnews cameraman.

On Christmas Eve, the South Vietnamese 7th Battalion ARVN (Airborne) attacked the town with aerial bombing artillery fire. Some of the villagers on the outskirts came out to join the South Vietnamese and to tell them about enemy positions inside the town. Suspects were blindfolded and sent to Kompong Cham air base for questioning.

The town was not badly damaged but some of the barns and lighter buildings were burned out. Many civilians were injured and these were given first aid. They then had to wait for helicopters to take them to hospital in Kompong Cham (37 miles to north-east) or Phnom Penh (75 miles to southwest).

Eventually the South Vietnamese troops move on to the nearby Mekong River.

The South Vietnamese, based on Kompong Cham, have carried out a series of operations in eastern Cambodia to prevent the rice harvest from falling into the hands of the communists.
