Background: Experts from 21 African countries gathered in Addis Ababa on Thursday (October 10) for a six-day conference exchanging ideas and discussing latest trends in maritime transport and container traffic.

An important task of the conference will be to draw up the African position as regards an international meeting on transport dus in Geneva next month.

The delegates will also be examining the vital problem of trying to arrest the current trend towards soaring transport costs.

In an opening statement, Mr. A. E. Osanya-Nyyeneque, Assistant Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs of the Organisation of African Unity, said it was the duty of Africa to defend its interests in the field of transport.
