  • Description

East Germany and Angola have signed a twenty-year friendship and cooperation treaty, according to the Communist Party daily Neues Deutschland. The newspaper says the treaty was signed in Luanda on Monday (19 February) by East German Communist leader Erich Honecker and Angolan President Agostinho Neto.

SYNOPSIS: The accord was signed at the end of a four-day visit to Angola by Mr Honecker who arrived in the country at the head of a high-ranking delegation. His tour of Africa has already taken him to Libya and includes visits to Zambia and Mozambique.

Both leaders signed a joint declaration in which they condemned China's attack of Vietnam. It also called for a total arms embargo on South Africa, and an immediate end to what it termed political, economic and military collaboration by imperialist powers with the racist regime in Pretoria.

The treaty itself pledges both countries to cultivate closer bilateral ties, particularly in trade and culture. And it stressed what it called Angola's rights to defend its territory against the aggression of Pretoria by any means, including calling on international solidarity.

Mr Honecker has also pledged increased aid to Mr Sam Nujoma's South West African People's Organisation ....SWAPO. East Germany supplies black nationalist forces in Southern Africa with medical supplies, tents and uniforms but maintains it does not send weapons. South African leaders have accused East Germany of training SWAPO guerrillas and stationing its own troops in southern Angola near the Namibian border. These charges have been denied. Mr Honecker left Angola for Zambia where he pays an official visit as guest of President Kenneth Kaunda.
